The responsibilities of the RN Infection Preventionist include, but are not limited to: 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develops, teaches, directs, and evaluates infection control in-service programs for all personnel across all shifts in accordance with regulations and identified needs. Participates in the orientation of all new employees for infection control and conducts annual infection control in-services.
  • Implements preventative programs for staff and residents, including but not limited to flu vaccinations, wellness programs, Pneumovax immunizations, and annual TB screenings.
  • Assists with the maintenance of health files in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Coordinates the employee health program for all personnel.
  • Participates in the Safety Committee.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates the facility’s Infection Control Program.
  • Collects data and summarizes infection control reports on a monthly basis, including identifying problems, actions taken, and progress/outcomes.
  • Ensures the implementation of corrective action plans when areas for improvement are identified.
  • Notifies the Administrator and reports infection outbreaks to the County Public Health Department and the Department of Health Services as required by law.
  • Monitors employees’ infection control practices regularly by observing handwashing techniques, linen handling, Foley catheter care, etc. If a breach in technique is identified, the Infection Preventionist (IP) will provide “just-in-time” training and inform the Director of Staff Development (DSD) if further training is necessary.
  • Ensures compliance with annual TB skin testing/screening for employees and annual TB screening for residents.
  • Reviews all infection control policies and plans annually and updates them as needed.
  • Prepares annual goals for the infection control program and conducts an annual evaluation at the end of the year.
  • Reviews all infections to:
    • Determine if they meet the criteria for nosocomial infections. 
    • Assess whether the infection is community-acquired or nosocomial.
    • Identify potential outbreaks.
    • Investigate causes/sources of outbreaks (e.g., gastrointestinal (GI) illness, foodborne illness, etc.).
    • Identify opportunities for improvement in infection control practices. 
    • Prepare a report detailing infections by type and organism, including the monthly attack rate, for submission to the Infection Control Committee along with recommended actions. 
    • Report any reportable diseases and outbreaks as per procedure. 

 

Experience and Skills:

  • Must hold a current RN license to practice in the State of California.
  • Minimum of two years of nursing experience as a licensed nurse.
  • Teaching experience preferred.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • The Infection Preventionist participates in local APIC programs and other relevant educational opportunities. Documentation of attendance is maintained in the Infection Preventionist's Human Resources file.
